Poke the Sleeping Bear part 2

Having cleared the main and 2nd floors of the manor, the party proceeded to the basement where they found the food storage rooms and a hidden Shadowborn Bugbear that nearly strangled Sabir son of Sadim to death. The party did manage to maneuver effectively before too much brain damage was done, and the bugbear was terminated. The far more interesting discovery in the basement was a small prison/shrine to Zehir that was occupied by some Snaketongue cultists holding a couple of prisoners hostage over a trap door. While negotiations were futile, they did allow the party to position themselves to make a daring rescue attempt. The rescue went well until Anaxagoras Xeniades IV was pushed onto the relevant trap door, and said trap door opened up underneath him. Luckily he managed to catch hold on one of the doors, but his torch fell, illuminating the depths of the pit and the Yuan-Ti Anathema waiting at the bottom. Draysys Cataryl and Bree were able to do most of the dirty work and Sabir son of Sadim eventually killed a minion and sent his corpse into the pit. Anaxagoras Xeniades IV climbed out of the pit and at the behest of the prisoners closed the trap door. The world was safe once more.

After finishing their looting and deciding against gratuitous vandalism, the party headed out to return to Kristophan. On the way, the group stumbled upon a group of goblins in process of setting up a trap. After a few moments of staring at each other, the goblins attacked. After a relatively short and easy battle, the goblins started to scatter. A Wyvern swept in and chomped a fleeing goblin before strafing the party. Sabir son of Sadim managed to ground and immobilize the beast, and the party made short work of it before it managed to sting Sabir son of Sadim to death.

Poke the Sleeping Bear part 1

The party has been ordered to conduct a raid of a country manor owned by a certain crimlord. It is hoped that some sensitive papers may have been left in the manor from his recent stay there. Also, any money looted can be used to promote the cause.

Hankerin’ for some violence, the party didn’t hesitate to embark on the foolhardy quest. On their approach, they found a small group under attack by some of Diogenes’ thugs. After defeating the ruffians (and taking a prisoner) the talked to the survivors, a halfling and a drow. The halfling Bree was on an even more foolhardy quest, to prove herself to her family, she intended to loot some kind of prize from the crimelord’s manor. Apparently the drow and others were attempting to facilitate this desire when their attempt to lure the patrol on guard worked a little too well.

After patching up their wounds, the party proceeded to the manor and infiltrated it handily through the front door. After ambushing a poor sap coming out of a chamber pot room, the party got into a brawl with a few blokes having a meal (who mustered a couple reinforcements as well). After sweeping clean the ground floor, the party proceeded to the 2nd floor, which seemed much quieter… Until Lashaneth Latherian opened the door to the harem and was quickly skewered twice by a Warforged (serving as eunuch). After a brief but intense fight with the construct and a couple of orcs, the party was again victorious.

Left 4 Undead

The party received a request by the The Kristophanian Peoples Front to investigate rumors regarding undead creatures wandering the sewers near the tombs under the old part of town. Of greatest importance was to try to find the source of the undead: whether from followers of Orcus or Vecna, unaffiliated necromancers or just a surge of necrotic energy from the shadowfell.

Not afraid of a little sewage or undeath, the party put on their waders and went fishing for zombies and brown trout. After avoiding a rat swarm that was feasting on a vagrant, the party bumped into a couple of giant rats, which were quickly dispatched. While this was happening however, a skeleton was seen wandering in the distance. The party investigated and in fact found many skeletons. As the skirmish progressed several varieties of zombies also appeared and much disgusting combat ensued.

After the immediate threat had subsided, the party took a short rest, then proceeded to search for more trouble. They found it in the form of some cultists of Orcus performing rituals, surrounded by undead. Once spotted, the party had no choice but to bravely flee for their lives. The successful mission brings with it disturbing news. It is not wise to regard the cult of Orcus lightly.

Rescue at Rivenroar 4

We finish up cleansing the remains of the Rivenroar castle. Go ahead and read the adventure to see what you may have missed.

We return to Bizona with the townspeople we rescued as well as the items stolen from the Great Hall. We also bring back the bodies of Kartenix (the one we left Kristophan to go and find) and the hero Thrain Lamename for a proper burial. Draysys Cataryl takes his leave of the group as everybody heads back to Bizona. He says he must go on a walkabout before returning to Kristophan.

WotC published the first 3 adventures in this campaign for free – we just played the first one. If anybody is interested in the next one (designed for 5 level 3 chars), or the 3rd (5 level 4 chars), let Bryan know.

For simplicity, I will split up the treasure total 5 ways since that’s what the adventure was calculated to give, but everybody can take an equal share.

XP: 555 each + a bonus of 120XP for returning all townspeople and the items from the Great Hall

Treasure: 170g each + a bonus of 80 gold for claiming the reward, plus a total of 4 healing potions (let’s make sure each character has 1 – we’ll split these up next time we play).

MNP: Thrain Lamename for being the first character to die since the switch to 4e. Jared’s next character will have to inherit the prize.

Something got into the Hand and it went bad

Sseptember 494
Morrik has provided a crudely drawn map which may or may not be accurate. It could potentially, perhaps, maybe, be somewhat helpful in getting our sorry behinds to the current encampment of the Army of the Red Hand.
On our way out of the building where we met with Morrik, a courier gives us a note from Eoffram to meet him at an armory 8 blocks south and 3 east. He reports that some relics from the last war with the Hand were looted from the Hall of Great Valor. They don’t know why the Hand would want them. He will propose a deal – he will give us basic magical armor now, then 200g for the return of any living townspeople we encounter (the current reward) plus an extra 100g if we recover the looted items. If we return empty handed (assuming the people we’re looking for aren’t there) we give back the armor as well.
Looted items we need to return:
Ornate, gilded dragoncrest helm
Ceremonial platinum longsword
Set of three shields with the Red Hand insignia and charred holes
Set of iron gauntlets with extensive filigree
Heraldic battle standard depicting two hands clasped in a handshake

Using the crude map, Draysys Cataryl and Lashaneth Latherian were able to guide the group to the encampment indicated on the map.

Rescue at Rivenroar

Sseptember 494
The Kristophanian Peoples Front is missing 5 people: 3 humans, 1 eladrin, 1 dwarf in Bizona AKA Brindol. We consent to their request to go looking for them. They provide names and a physical description of each.

We borrowed 2 horses from Draysys’ family and 2 from Lashaneth’s family as well. Draysys Cataryl, Thrain Lamename, Lashaneth, and Anaxagoras Xeniades IV headed out to Bizona, straight to the tavern Antler and Thistle (of course), where we fit in seamlessly.

We do a Gather information skill challenge; Our rogue (Lashaneth), “accidentally” grabs one of the city guards butts while asking whats new in town, Anaxagoras Xeniades IV accidentally calls a man an old lady and gets kneed in the groin. Thrain Lamename tried his hardest and did not offend anyone, but sadly his fellows screwed the goat on that one. Draysys tried in vain to get drunk.

So we resort to eavesdropping and learned that some creatures have been attacking the city and taken some of it’s residents.

Suddenly the door flew open and in rushed 4 hobgoblins yelling, “For Sinruth! For the HAND”! They kill a few of the locals, then a Goblin Carrying a bitumen torch lights the main table on fire. More hobgoblins join the fun with him. Several parts of the tavern that the goblin had lit on fire began to combine into a conflagration.

Sadly with the exception of Draysys Cataryl we all powerful suck, had it not been for the regular people in the bar we would have been screwed. It is a sad day when our heroes are shown up by a bunch of drunks using improvised weapons.

We leave the bar and see a war wagon carrying two goblins being pulled by an ogre. The ogre is carrying what we assume is a cask of Whiskey or Bourbon. One of the goblins lights the cask on fire and the Ogre throws it at Anaxagoras Xeniades IV, narrowly missing him. Thrain Lamename cries out at the waste of bourbon, only to find out it is just flaming pitch exploding right in front of him. Draysys Cataryl keeps with his standard double attack and plugs the ogre with arrows from his trusty longbow. One of the hobgoblin archers in the wagon mishandled his bow after a shot and accidentally drops it off to the side of the wagon. His hobgoblin partner politely asks him to retrieve it by pushing him out of the wagon. After Thrain Lamename does minor damage (thanks in part to a spell by Anaxagoras Xeniades IV), both Anaxagoras Xeniades IV and Thrain Lamename get pounded good by the ogre. Draysys Cataryl decides to make life a little more interesting for the orge and remaining hobgoblin in the cart and lights 2 arrows on fire – thanks to the nearby burning pitch provided by the orge – and lights two of the casks of pitch on fire (we should have a parade for him). This lights the cart itself on fire and causes the hobgoblins to abandon the orge to it’s fate. As a group effort we slay the ogre, HURAA! Our heroics get noticed by a nearby group of townsfolk.

We meet with Councilman Eoffram Troyas after spending the night healing wounded city guards and townspeople and assisting in securing the outer gates. He thanks us for our duties and gives us a place to rest.

After our rest we meet back up with Councilman Troyas and he would like to hear more about our story and has something he would like to talk to us about. He recognizes one of the names from the people we are looking for named Kartenix. He is fairly sure he a human on the missing persons list but has no idea who the other 4 people are who we’re looking for. Some items have been reported missing from The Hall of Great Valor, which has been looted.

After some negotiations he tells us about the Army of the Red Hand (an army that was growing in size and several cities had to band together to defeat them 10 years ago). We are to get information from a prisoner that should be able to help us on our way. The password is “not in the face”.

Morrik is the hobgoblin prisoner chained to the wall, and he will not give us anything unless we unchain him, which eventually we agree to do. Sinruth is one of the leaders of the red hand, he is not sure what Sinruth wants with this town. The operations against this town are not done. He finally requests a parchment and pen to draw us a map but none of us are sure that the map is trustworthy.

Dirty Work

Saugust 494
To prove the dedication of the party’s resistance cell and provide a valuable service to the resistance at the same time, an unpleasant mission was delivered via the usual dead drop. The party was to clear a section of sewer tunnels beneath the city of giant rats and any other threats encountered. This would allow other operatives to use the sewers for clandestine travel with less risk of a confrontation.

On the way to the chosen sewer entrance the party confronted a group of thugs who apparently had unwholesome intentions towards a damsel in distress in an alleyway. Draysys Cataryl demonstrated his impulsive nature by firing a warning shot into one of the ruffian’s chest. The battle which ensued was brief and only two of the six street punks managed to escape.

The sweep of the sewers was a bit less pleasant. After fighting off a rat swarm, some giant rats and a couple dire rats the party continued through the filth until they found what appeared to be a pair of humans by a small fire relaxing in the sewer tunnel. After a bit of diplomacy the vagrants opened the door to their secret sewer hideout, which happened to be full of giant rats and dire rats. The vagrants revealed themselves to be wererats and battle ensued. The party fought well and dispatched the threat, recovering a bit of loot and claiming the hideout as their own (for future use in an emergency).

On the final stretch the party was ambushed by an Otyugh that was concealed in the muck. Luckily there was only one, and it appeared to be in less than perfect condition. The Otyugh was soundly defeated and the party exited the sewer to wash up and recover. Draysys Cataryl and {Dave’s character} had contracted Filth Fever, but with Anaxagoras Xeniades IV’s and {Ben’s Character}’s help they made a speedy recovery.

Finding the Dead

Saugust 494
In the basement of Draysys Cataryl’s family tailoring shop, we learned of the sad tale of some of our brother revolutionaries. The day before, 6 members of a sister revolutionary cell were taken from prison, loaded into a cart from gate 4, and the cart returned empty this morning. Given the circumstances, it’s likely that these 6 were killed. They consisted of 2 halflings, 1 gnome, 1 eladrin, 1 dragonborn, and 1 dwarf. What happened to them?

Although we know the point of departure for the cart, we do not know which city gate the cart passed through. The 5 of us decided to split up and search each of the 3 city gates to find more information on the events of the previous night. Farticus was able to use his contacts to determine with reasonable certainty that the cart did not pass through the gate by the docks. Through process of elimination, we decided upon the Bearkiller Legion gate and found tracks that came from a cart of the correct size. We followed the trail for about 4 miles outside of the city where it left the road. The tracks led into a forest area where we encountered a group of Goblins. After an intense battle, we defeated them and continued following the cart tracks.

The trail led into an underground cavern, but oddly, was protected by a locked door. Inside the cavern were ZOMBIES!!! A couple of them were hidden in a small underground creek, which caught us by surprise. Sadly, among their number were a dragonborn, halfling, gnome, and dwarf. Our fears seemed to be confirmed that our brothers-in-arms were indeed dead. We had no choice but to destroy what was left of them. The cave had more bodies in it that were not zombies and we found one wearing an Amulet of Health.

Upon returning to the city, Draysys delivered the bad news to our sister cell via the standard drop box.
